Becky’s Psaltery Pt. 2

I thought I’d give one last update before I finish this psaltery.

Basically, all the building is done and all that’s left is the finishing, buffing, and stringing. (This usually takes between 7 and 10 days.)

Here’s a shot of the quilted maple back, with a centerstrip of purpleheart.Becky’s Bowed Psaltery - Quilted Maple

Hopefully, if there are no hiccups, the psaltery should be ready to ship by the end of next week. (That dragonfly tail is really nerve-wracking to work around! =) If you look at the picture in the previous post, you’ll see what I mean. But I really don’t think it is as fragile as it looks, since it’s plywood.)

The more pictures I see, the more anxious I am to have it in my hands. It is turning out so beautiful! Is it still on schedule to be done by the end of this week?

Right now the finish is hardening. While technically I could probably have strung and finished it as early as yesterday, it really boils down to how durable and polished a finish you want. For instance, if you were to pick it up and hold it right now for a long period of time, your fingerprints would be sunk into the finish, sometimes permanently.

I plan to level and buff the finish later this week. If all goes well, I would string it soon thereafter. But I think that even if it is finished by the end of this week, it might be best to hold it over the weekend to give it a better chance to harden even more before shipping.

As always, I’ll let you know if anything unexpected happens. :)
